'Whole Lotta Red' Review

Playboi Carti’s long awaited album ‘Whole Lotta Red’ has finally released! The young rap star has been teasing us with this album since 2018 and came in clutch at the end of 2020. With that being said, let’s dig into the album.

In all honesty, I did not like this album compared to previous releases. I may be in the minority group that thinks this and that’s okay with me because I know I’m saving my ears from multiple listens. There were more expectations for this album since there had been so much hype behind it up until its release.

I had to force myself on multiple occasions to listen to the album in its entirety. For one the album has too many songs. Yes, I do understand that most of them are short but twenty-four songs? Entirely too many songs to listen to Carti’s baby voice and not get annoyed at it. It could be that I’m getting older and my interest is that his voice isn’t there anymore; I can’t quite put my finger on it. Even after having this many songs, Carti still plans on dropping a deluxe version album and I’m not sure why he thinks we want to listen to close thirty songs or more. If you do, more power to you. I say this due to the last project I genuinely enjoyed that was this long was ‘Faces’ by Mac Miller and if you ever listened to that then you know how great it is.

I will say, WLR did have some strong points such as its production. Kanye West, Pi’erre Bourne and Mathew Williams were able to produce great sounds that fit perfectly with Carti’s voice. The production of this album is another example of how a producer can take a project to another level and give it a few more brownie points. Another great aspect album is the length of each song. Granted, I am fairly annoyed at the fact that there are so many songs, Carti made up for it by shortening most songs to the length that artist Tierra Whack usually puts out. Outside of that; I can’t really speak highly on the lyricism due to me not fully understanding everything that Carti says but I did find myself nodding to some of the nonsense.

Although this album didn’t hit the spot for me there were a few songs that I actually saved which are:

  • ‘Rockstar Made’

  • ‘M3tamorphosis’ ft Kid Cudi

  • ‘Vamp Anthem’

  • ‘Place’

I do think that Carti could’ve delivered a more solid album. As it stands, this is probably my least favorite album from him. With Carti being signed to A$AP Mob’s label, there should’ve been more heat or at least some type of control of this album, and that comes from someone who despises labels. All in all, I would rate WLR a solid 6.5 out of 10 stars.

Was this a hit or miss from Carti? Let me know down below as well as your favorite tracks.
