"See You When I'm Famous!!!!!" album review

Let me set the record straight right quick. I used to be one of the biggest Kyle fans out there. From begging my parents in high school to let me go to his concerts (they didn’t let me), to my early years in college being able to actually see and meet him twice, he’s always been in my library. Similar to other artists, I stopped listening to him because I just wasn’t in that phase in my life where I wanted to listen to him like that. I listened to his album ‘Light of Mine’ and wasn’t too impressed upon initial release but it eventually grew on me. I was still skeptical about his future as an artist and whether or not he reached his peak with a couple good hits here and there.

I caught word in May that Kyle was releasing a “nostalgic” album that was going to take us back to the good days, I was ecstatic! I’ve always enjoyed that bubblegum rap style he had mixed in with his native Cali accent that made his music stand out. Due to him being a past favorite, I had high expectations for his recently released album ‘See you when I’m famous!!!!!’.

Upon my first listen I was somewhat uninterested in what he brought to the table. I’m not sure if it was the fact that I’ve outgrown his music over the years or if I wasn’t in the right mood to listen to it but I wasn’t too impressed with it. Similar to most artists, it was going to take me a few listens to really dissect the album and see what I like and don’t like about it. Whether it be the flow, lyrics, production, you name it. When comparing this album to his previous release such as ‘Beautiful Loser’ and ‘SMYLE’, I don’t think it lived up to the hype he was making it about.

It somewhat felt like Kyle was outshined by a lot of the features on the album. He’s not one to put this many features but we saw the likes of: Tyga, Rico Nasty, Bryson Tiller, K Camp, Trippie Redd, Rich the Kid, and a few other artists I’m not too familiar with. It was somewhat disappointing seeing how many artists took away from Kyle’s limelight in this album which I know he had potential to make this one of his best albums.

Throughout the album, he does bring his A game in terms of production. He’s always been one to have a great production team that caters to his needs as a rapper but he sometimes fumbles the bag with his lyrics. There’s songs such as ‘Bouncin’ and ‘GIRLS’ that remind us of the old pop rap Kyle which was a nice touch but as you progress through the album, you may feel as if he’s still riding to coattails of his hit single ‘iSpy’.

There were a few songs that stuck out to me such as:

  • ‘The Sun’, which features some nice vocals from Bryson Tiller

  • ‘GIRLS’ which paid a homage/sampled a classic Beastie Boys song

  • ‘YES!’ allowed Kyle and some of his friends to kinda just have fun and go crazy when rapping and actually be good at it

The album was somewhat enjoyable but definitely not concise. It was a bit all over the place for me which it a big turn off when listening to it after a few times. It’s for sure at the bottom of my list from him but that’s okay; not all albums from our favorites have to hit. With the exception of a few songs, it’s probably not an album that I’d bump on aux or while cleaning my apartment, etc.

I have to give Kyle his respect for the promotion for this album but it’s essentially a hit or miss album for most people.

Let me know what you guys think of the album. Favorite tracks? Favorite Kyle songs?
