First let me start off by saying I am nowhere near the biggest Drake fan and probably will never be. He’s had hits that have always been catchy to me but there’s always something more that I want from each project of his and that’s the same feeling I get with his most recent release ‘Dark Lane Demo Tapes’.
In today’s music industry there is a blurred line between the definition of an album and a mixtape. ‘Dark Lane Demo Tapes’, definitely falls along the lines of a mixtape. The project had the typical Drake vibe to it. Similar to the Call of Duty games, Drake’s music can be described as the same all around to the point where you will still play it but you know you won’t enjoy it as much as you should.
I have to give Drake his respect because he knows what’s going to sell and appeal to his fans and he did that with this project. He took advantage of the fact that we are inside all day and have no choice but to listen to it. He gave us a solemn project that reminds me of a mix of ‘If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late’ and ‘Nothing Was The Same’, which is another reason I sometimes think Drake is too consistent in his artistry. ‘Dark Lane Demo Tapes’ essentially just sounds like some throwaways from the usual sentimental side of Drake we grew up on which is arguably his best phase but eventually you get tired of hearing it.
Features from Playboi Carti, Giveon, and Sosa Geek added some spice to the project and made it more enjoyable in my opinion. Although I felt Carti had too much of his baby voice in ‘Pain 1993’, it was still a decent feature. There were some songs that stuck out to me such as ‘Chicago Freestyle’ and ‘War’ which reminded me why Drake is able to stay at the top of the charts for so long. In typical Drake fashion there is always that one catchy song that you can’t get out of your head and in this case it’s the one and only ‘Toosie Slide’. I can’t help but listen to this song and nod my head to it which I commend Drake for. It’s another timeless anthem by him which he knows how to make time and time again.
This “album” probably won’t go down as one of Drake’s best pieces; it still is somewhat enjoyable to listen to. I don’t think it’s something I’d willingly go back a few months from now since it really won’t be a mood for the Summer months unfortunately, unless we’re all still stuck inside that is. All in all, this ‘Dark Lane Demo Tapes’ is “just another” Drake project. There’s decent content but not a lot. There’s an emotional appeal to it but then again it’s what we expect from him. I’m probably going to get some heat from the die hard Drake fans but I feel as if he releases music because he knows it’ll sell whether it be good or bad.
Let me know how you felt about Drake’s newest release down in the comments and feel free to drop your favorite songs!
I honestly agree. Drake will always slap solely because it’s Drake. This just wasn’t his best. Now VIEWS???? Views was definitely a good album, and I don’t think he’s had an album as good since then.
Something about a new drake album has always felt spiritual to me. “Chicago freestyle” and “desires” make me think about my own life and how I connect with the world is ways that feel meaningful to me. However, I’m constantly disappointed my Drake’s willingness to settle for what the mainstream audience wants to hear. I think an artist loses some of their integrity when they do that. He figured out the equation, just like I know how to get an “A” in class. That’s too safe. It pushes me towards the artists I love who push boundaries, and encourages me to seek new artists. While I’ll always listen to a new Drake album, and I’ll find something that is dreamy&…
