'Certified Lover Boy'

Industry mogul Drake has finally dropped his long awaited album ‘Certified Lover Boy’. After a couple delays we are able to dissect his sixth studio album.

Drake is arguably one of the largest artists of our generation. To reach that caliber, one must know how to navigate the industry and have the recipe to continue pushing albums that will always sell. For Drake, this recipe has been in his cookbook for close to ten years.

First impressions go a long way in determining whether an album is worth coming back to multiple times and Drake has done it again with his intro of ‘Champagne Poetry’. 40 and Masego provide Drake the platform to draw the listener to another hit album which makes you want to listen from start to finish.

It’s a decent album that has a great flow that mixes in rapping, singing, and great features. As mentioned earlier, Drake has the recipe for a great album and definitely follows it to the T. There were a few songs that could’ve been cut but maybe Drake wanted to get as many charting songs as possible.

Favorite songs:

  • ‘Champagne Poetry’ is a phenomenal way to start an album. It draws the audience into yet another Drake album that will have many hits.

  • ‘Way 2 Sexy!’ Need we say more? The official hot boy summer anthem! Drake and Future have teamed up once again with the help of Young Thug to deliver another timeless classic.

  • ‘N 2 Deep’ is a personal favorite due to the sampling of Bun B’s ‘Get Throwed’ and features Drake singing until the halfway mark of the song then tag team with Future in the second half with a change of flow.

  • ‘7 AM on Bridle Path’ is the last song on the favorite list. This song is very reminiscent of the Drake we’ve grown up to like. Reminds you of being in high school listening to NWTS and Take Care.

As mentioned in our ‘Dark Lane Demo Tapes’ review, Drake has a ton of respect in our book by knowing how to market his albums and create something that will always do numbers but some may see this negative manner. People (myself) may argue with you and say that Drake doesn’t push himself enough to break out of the mold of being an artist that’s too consistent with his music. Consistency is good but after a while one can get tired of listening to the same songs about not trusting people and failed relationships but hey, that’s what sells.

At the end of the day ‘Certified Lover Boy’ is a decent revival from his previous lackluster album, “Scorpion’. Despite CLB following the consistency recipe of most Drake albums, it is a solid 6.5 out of 10 stars. This is album is what we somewhat expected from Drake but nonetheless, a decent summer album,
