If you’re a Tyler stan, you know it’s been two years since the release of his last album ‘IGOR’ and that we were due for a new one soon. Well, Tyler is back again with a new album, ‘Call Me If You Get Lost’!
This review was projected to come out last week but I’ll explain the delay later. It’ll be a long post, so fasten your seatbelts as we dissect the newest addition to the amazing discography of Tyler, the Creator.
Tyler began the rollout for his new album by releasing song snippets through the phone number 1-855-444-8888 and short video clips along the way, which kept fans anticipating his new project. Well on June 30th, 2021 the fans ate once again.
Baudelaire T, presents us with an avant garde album that is completely different from its predecessors. This is in terms of sound, bars, features, the whole shabang. ‘Call Me If You Get Lost’ is a joyous album that reminds me of being outside and doing what you enjoy. I do think that’s one of the themes of this album, doing what makes you happy, talking your ish, etc. This is prevalent on ‘MASSA’, ‘Rise!’, ‘Lumberjack’, and a few other songs from the album. Personally, the theme of doing what makes you happy goes a long way. For Tyler, there are many references to traveling, love, and his accolades scattered throughout the album which it’s safe to assume, these are what he holds dear to heart.
In CMIYGL, Tyler recruits the likes of the legendary DJ Drama, who you may know from past ventures of the ‘Gangsta Grillz’ series and countless mixtape appearances. With DJ Drama’s help, Tyler is able to give us an album that sounds like a mixtape which ultimately is the best. This mixtape sound allows Tyler the freedom to explore sounds that range from mellow rap in ‘SWEET/ I Thought You Wanted to Dance’ to something more aggressive such as the first single from the album, ‘Lumberjack’. Some may argue that Drama took away from the value of the album but beauty is in the eye of the beholder right?
There are some familiar faces on the album such as: Lil Wayne, Pharrell, and even bringing it back to OF days with surprising appearances from Frank Ocean and Domo Genesis. On the other hand, there are some random acts that I thought I’d never see on a Tyler album. These include Youngboy NBA on ‘WUSYANAME’. Holy hell, I was genuinely impressed by his flow on something that is drastically different from his style. Then there’s Uzi’s verse on ‘JUGGERNAUT’, and wow!
Favorite Songs:
RISE!
MASSA
RUNITUP
I really can’t explain in words why these are my favorites without saying to listen to them. Once you do, you’ll know why.
Least Favorite Songs
Manifesto, just due to Domo’s verse. I am a fan of Domo but I’m not sure if this song was his to slide on.
So, you guys want to know why this post was delayed? Well, a couple days after the release of the album Tyler released a tweet saying “Sign Up, Trust Me”, and as the stan I am, I did. Fast forward to 6/30, I received a text from Tyler’s automated messages saying to meet at a venue in Dallas at a certain time frame and bring a friend. Unaware and unsure what it was, I sped to the specified spot which had a line that was at least two blocks long. With the word of my homie Blake (huge s/o), I was notified that there was a free secret show that Tyler was doing later that night and we were camping out for tickets. Am I supposed to say no to seeing Tyler in a small intimate venue for his new album release? No sir!
The show was so fun! Being able to see Tyler for the fourth time and it being an intimate show really made me enjoy this album even more. Granted, it wasn’t a full tour but more of pit stops to see what songs fans were feeling from the album, it was still a great experience. If you guys do have the chance to see him for an upcoming tour, I would highly recommend it.
I could go on forever about this album and how great it is but do me a favor, go to a park, on a run, or just do what makes you happy while listening to it and let me know what you guys think of Tyler’s ‘Call Me If You Get Lost’!
See you guys on the next post!
